Use to be a few generations of Blankenships here. Can't think of a single person with that name now.

Located in the Northern part of WNC.

Very cool story about your wife's GGrandma Jim!! National Geographic coverage is priceless for your family's remembrance of her! Sounds like she had a very hard life but always kept the Faith which carried her through.

    Thank you for sharing!

I knew a Blankenship in the Nashville District Corps of Engineers office. He told of joining the Cavalry when it still had horses.

I actually think I remember that photo. I was a huge Natl. Geographic reader. I also went to school with a couple Blankenship's in HS here in NE TN. Graduated in 79'.

*I remember now why I remember it. My Grandmother was big into sewing similar quilts, as were here friends. She would have quilting parties at her house. My Grandmother kept that photo/story. She likely knew (or knew of) the woman. (Oda Belle Blankenship.) Small World.

Awesome story of the American spirit. Cool history to pass down the generations.

Many of us are just 4 or five generations from sleeping on a pallet on the floor.

We finally had running in the house when I was 10 years old. My parents bought the farm on which I now live and the house had indoor plumbing!

The shower was in the masonry block building (pump house) behind the main house. There was only one bathroom and it just had a tub. I would walk through snow to shower instead of taking a bath.
