Don't get mad at me....too funny not to share. Map of Alabama
My favorite quip is Birmingham...."if Portland had minorities"

It's funny....cause it's true.

I've only ever been to the military industrial complex area, but it is well labeled. Pretty decent BBQ up there too.

Are you sure that was not supposed to be TN?

My wife came out of Alabama but I'm not saying which part of the state she's from. 😀 That map is pretty accurate too 😉

I’ll be heading to Pensacola in a couple of days to spend Christmas with my daughter and son-in-law. He is Navy and stationed there. We go to Alabama often when we are there. Lamberts Cafe is a must visit.

My wife grew up in the Florida panhandle ( Pensacola) or as they call it LA... Lower Alabama

Don't forget Hurricane Magnet.

I was at Columbus AFB Mizzippi for almost five years. You could spit to Alabama. Fished the Black Warrior River a lot, right near that "college town" and also was at Maxwell AFB in Montgomery for 90 days. This was back when there were still "Whites Only" restrooms and water fountains, mind you - no matter what "the law" said. You quickly learned exactly which doors of a bar you entered, where you sat in a restaurant, and most especially how NOT to have a Yankee accent.
It might be different today, but since they are still bitter about losing the War of Southern Stubbornness, probably not.

There is less and less of that as time passes....the thing I don't see changing anytime soon is the Alabama/Auburn rivalry and the ability to buy beer in the town I live in.

That map seems dead on to me. My 3 years stationed in Mobile taught me a few things about AL:
- The term “highway” is used very loosely. If you’re going to travel through AL, think of the interstate less as a single road and more like a whole bunch of random concrete scraps laid in a line.
- When traveling the aforementioned highways, your natural reaction will be to assume a trash truck overturned somewhere ahead. Nope. That’s just AL.
- The I-10 Bridge at Mobile is the gateway to the “Dirty South.” Everything changes from there as you head West.
- AL is bad…..until you get to MS, which makes AL seem less bad. Then you get to LA, and figure MS wasn’t THAT bad. Doesn’t start getting better until after you get into TX and leave Houston in the rear-view.
All the above said, I did enjoy my time down there. Only place yet that I’ve been able to go out in my canoe and hog hunt, deer hunt, scoop crabs, and catch red fish all in the same outing, without even needing to wear shoes.

Mobile does have Mardi Gras. When I was driving the big rig down I-10 in February, I was surprised to see Mardis Gras celebrations held in a dozen places in Alabama and Mississippi. I had thought they were only in New Orleans.

They have My Cousin Vinny in south Alabama. It was set there, but the movie was filmed in Monticello Georgia.

I have always said that stereotypes exist because a significant enough portion of the population exhibits the stereotypical behavior for it to be true.

I have lived in South or North Carolina most of my life.We were always bufooned and made fun of for being uneducated, third world hillbillies.Of course none of us natives gave a damn what others thought. Now for whatever reason we are overran with people from all over the country, and world that suddenly love it here. The majority of these folks seem to be financially well to do and are not afraid to spend their money here.If you are near one of the well to do areas and hear a southern accent,he is probably cutting the grass or painting a house. The good side of that is the guy cutting the grass is probably getting paid a couple of hundred dollars per yard and the better painters are charging $25000. up to paint the outside of some of these homes. Just like Reagans trickle down economy.

Mark- if you are into military type things, check out the Air Force Armament Museum. Worth the stop. Lotsa aircraft, firearms, things that go bang. On the road to the Valparaiso Airport. Without powder, the Air Force is a flying club.

Yep, libs and woke people love to condemn stereotypes, but there is at least a bit of truth in most of them.

Just looked it up. Very cool place. I’ll see if we can fit it in this trip. If not, maybe the next one. Thanks for the heads up.

If I remember correctly, Ft. Rucker is also in Alabama. A major Army Aviation base.
