Jury duty this morning ( kinda long)
I went to the court house and sat with around 60 people waiting for selection. The judge told us the lawyers and defendant were ironing out some legal matters and jury selection would proceed shortly.
An hour and 15 minutes later, the judge, lawyers, and defendant entered the room. The judge informed us the defendant had agreed to a plea arrangement. She pled guilty to second degree murder, kidnapping, use of a firearm in the commission.
The judge said we were free to go. We would receive a check for $50 and don't spend it all in one place.
I sort of knew the defendant. She and my stepdaughter were once married to brothers. She was once a registered nurse. She shot her live in boyfriend in front of his young daughter.
She's about 50 years old so I doubt she'll ever get out of jail.
I am subject to be called again up until early April.
Next time I'm taking a cushion to sit on.

That would have been an interesting case to be on Jim. Of coarse, knowing the defendant would have exempted you for sure!

I was called once for jury duty once. The lawyer asked me if I knew the defendant or anybody else. I said yes.
I said I have met the defendant before, I knew the investigating officer.
I am a Deputy Sheriff.
You are excused.
It is stupid to include law enforcement in your jury pool.

I've been called in at least twice when the defendant pled out as the jury was being selected. The DA said it happens quite often. The defendant sees the jury being selected and the realty of the situation hits home.
