    The "Lead Ring" & using lube and wads prevent chain fires. From the video it looked like he did not use either.

    Looks like a setup. Why did the video camera just happen to be setup to record it? Why did it happen that there was nobody else on the range? The idiot intentionally used undersize balls with no wad, and no over grease. He wanted a "cool video."

    Had that happen on my first time out with my brand new brass frame navy when I was 19 YO. We both survived unscathed, but it got my attention.

    I think you nailed it. I have fired many rounds in the cap and ball pistols, never had a chain fire. I do not believe it necessary to put lube on top of the ball, I can't imagine Jeb Stuart's troops riding around on a July day with melted Crisco running down their holster. I use lubed wads on top of the powder.

    I have an H&R .22 revolver that would fire two at once until I smoothed a burr on the breech face. Never hurt anything, just an extra loud boom.

    same with mine, and as long as you get a good ring cut it never even entered my mind. shot better 1000 rounds few couple of those old pistols and never had any trouble like in the video........

    I actually have been trying to make my C&B revolvers chain fire. I think the only way to do it is with an undersized ball or chamber that has a bur / tool chatter in it.

    Leaving caps off loaded chambers doesn't do it for me. Not using lube doesn't do it for me. Slopping lube all over the place and being purposely messy loading Black Powder doesn't work for me either.

    Chainfires don't damage the gun. They wont damage you as long as you keep your fingers and body parts away from the front of the cylinder.
