"Besides the places I did want to move to turned into California."

Due to all those who beat you to the move????

Lots of us empathize with you. Not by choice, but I ended up working in Sacramento for many years.

One day about 25 years ago, I saw the writing on the wall when I was refused purchase of a Stevens Favorite single shot rifle because I could not show proof that I had a gun safe to keep it secured in. Convinced my wife that the state was headed downhill, and we moved to eastern Montana. Never looked back.

After I retired I saw the writing on the wall. I left San Diego and moved to Idaho. I never looked back except to sell all the rental property (worth $2 mil). I have been in Idaho for 20 years.

Get out now, while you still can.

@yoshmyster as crazy as it sounds dad is thinking about Kansas. We already own a small house there and the cost of living seems good. I bought the little house for 33K cash and there are lots of job opportunities. Something to think about.

My little corner of the world is off the beaten path, affordable housing, and jobs aplenty. Current River flows through it, backs up to national forest and still gun friendly.

Yosh, you can do it. You can move and start over. I don't think you're too old to do it. It's a lot of work, for sure.

Based on the rents, gas and cost of living in Kal, I don't see how anyone can afford to stay. My nephew is in the LA area and hates it, but his wife & daughter want to stay. I've offered to give him $$$ towards a down payment on a house, provided it's not in Commiefornia.

Sad and getting worse and no light at the end of the tunnel.

I've not seen any GOOD pres candidates worth voting for yet (just the lesser of the evils) and not much hope for anyone turning around the mess within 4 years if elected that has been created in the last 12 years.

I was in California a few times many years ago.It had some of the most beautiful places I had ever seen,a booming economy and plenty of opportunity.Just going by what I have read and am hearing it is a shame at what has happened to such a once great state.

Mobuck - Maybe? Or the ones i would flee from made the states in to California. At least they saved me the move. Now maybe I'll move for the tax reason to Oregon or Washington State but is it worth the 10%?

chris8X57  - Has it been 25 years? I guess it's nearly so. Eastern Montana might as well be Alaska with the snow.

Alpine  - Too late for me. Besides when newsom become the big "P" the US will be envy of the green idiocracy.

Lady Rae/susie  - It's not about inexpensive housing. My condos paid off. It's that I could do without the HOA fees.

Mr. Perfect  - I figure I'll be around for another 10/12 years so it's not worth the try. Yes I know I may get better "quality" of life out of California but who can promise? Be crazy if California turns red by the time I kick off.

Toolman286  - Most states are turning in to California if they haven't they will. Look at Oregon and Washington State. Soon I see directly to the East of California will follow. Arizona, Nevada and maybe Idaho?

Oh I'm done and I accepted my fate. The boats a sinking and I'm going down with it. Be nice if I could be a burden to the state.

I'm very old school regarding this topic. Fleeing from a much loved place I call home, to live where my family has been for many generations and the ancestors are buried here.......

Many of them had to fight (and some died) to protect their homes and country.

NOPE! Not going to run away. I'm Not even a California resident, but......... Don't want to get political here.

I agree, don’t do like I did I am self employed with several very successful businesses as long as I run them. I locked myself in and now it s very hard to move and start the businesses all over again.

I sure love visiting California, I think we are going back to San Diego this summer for vacation. But I refuse to go near the big cities

Its only going to get worse. WA & OR are just as bad and most state legislatures meet soon after the first of the year. Being DEMOCRAT controlled, you can be certain more gun control legislation will be passed.

Heard WA state legislature will meet soon and a 1 gun per month limit law is on the table and repeal of preemption laws.

San Diego's not a big city?

@yoshmyster What do you do for a living? My guess is you'll be able to find work doing that or something similar in any sane state.

Couldn't do that without taking a big hit on capital gains. Be better to take the cash and run to Taiwan (no extradition) since Argentina will extradite. Maybe some former Soviet states? Where the white women at?

NeoBlackdog  - What ever I'll do I'll need to be close to a toilet these days on bad days. Now if only the rest of the country paid burger flippers $20 like California (yes they started this, this year '24) I can live the Kevin Spacy "American Beauty" life. If I didn't have the stomach issue I might've moved by now?

If that's your primary residence and you put the money into another residence isn't that exempt from capital gains taxes?

I thought I had to roll over all or whatever I "gained" otherwise it would be taxed. Not that I'll have much left over but I'll have to live off that a while I look for a job (no longer pretty so I'll have to earn) and use some of that to move. Sure the 403b is there but that's more of a vacation at Vegas money.

Not if you've been where you are for at least 2 years.

Just as a little aside my best friend, and his family, just sold some prime real estate on Palomar Mountain (over 100 acres near the Observatory) that has been in the family for over 100 years. He just bought property in Virginia and is moving there.

    He is done with Kalifornia.

Unfortunately, the major portion of the migration out of California is into strong red states like Texas, Florida, and Tennessee with the intent of turning them blue just like was done with Colorado.

Mr. Perfect  - Really? But there isn't anywhere to my liking. I suppose I could still look?
