New Year’s Day superstitions: Don’t wash clothes; do look for a tall, dark, stranger; eat greens
Eat your greens to get money in 2024, but don't sweep the floor on New Years Day or you sweep out the luck.
I love these kinds of things!
Mom always cooked a meal that included sauerkraut and pork for good luck. I don't have any kraut, but I will grill some pork chops later and we have some salad mix that contains some cabbage. That should be close enough. 😁

Black eyed peas, an absolute must for New Years.

Sorry, gonna be grilling two really nice NY Strips, some onions and a couple baked potatoes, w/butter, sour cream. Don't get much better than that. IMHO.
*Steaks and Taters were Excellent. Good way to start off the New Years. 👍

remember mom and dad talking about grandma putting a nickle in with a head of cabbage cooked all day. who ever got the nickle in their dinner portion was supposed to have good luck for the year. of course back then a nickle was worth the long walk to town to spend...

Big old pot of venison chili, venison summer sausage, cheese, assorted crackers, chips and rice crispy treats !!!!!
I guess I better add a salad for the greens....

Blackeyed peas, greens, corn on the cob, cornbread for starters. Finishing off with pumpkin pie and chocolate satin pie. #1 and her family will join me.
And today is Mimosa Monday.

Mom cooked cabbage with a dime in the pot. It was to ensure prosperity for the whole new year.

Numerous countries have a "coin in the food" tradition that is supposed to bring good luck to the finder. In actuality, the good luck was in not choking to death on the coin.
Today is the third. I honestly cannot remember what we ate on the 1st. I'm sure it was nothing "traditional" though.

We just remove the coin from the vessel before serving the food

Yep and the Japanese eat live octopus for some sort of "right of passage". Several have choked to death cause the critter just would no go down.

So, things to eat on the 1st?
I've always gotten a kick when reading about those hunters after making their first kill.
The elders in the party making them eat the raw bloody heart of the downed animal. 😁

mom and my MIL both were southern would make cabbage and some other dishes I have forgotten about now, it was suppose to insure a good year for us
my guess way back when if you could eat on any day was a good day
and maybe eating on the 1st you had a small celebration that you would have at least something the rest of the year ?
I never heard of the nickel or dime ( coin ) in the pot until recently.
