I bought this old gun today.
J. C. Higgins 583-17 Bolt Action with tubular magazine. 12 GA. Full choke. It has a Williams peep sight.

I have one, 583.16,. It was in the Sears recall and people are afraid of them. I am not convinced they are all bad. Don

I saw an old 410 bolt action shotgun at a gun show today.The price was $495.

Not to take any hing away from your shotgun. But...............
Sear had a recall on these shotguns due to numerous problems first offered $ 210.00 to turn in the bolt (making the shotgun useless). No fixes.
Later on they Downgraded this to a $50.00 gift card.They stopped in 2001.
The Screw on the side holding bolt in would shear off and when cycling the bolt it would come all the way back hitting the shooter
The Firing pin retaining pin would break and send the firing pin back in the shooter face
The side of the receiver holding bolt in place on the side would shear off and send the bolt back in the shooters face.
Yes we turned in our share of bolt way back (100+) . We don't don't sell parts for these shotguns due to liability issues
.Over 25,000 bolts were turned in. We get call all the time from folks finding a good deal on a shotgun that want an bolt.

Not to hijack your post jimdeere but curious if there was a recall on these Sears shotguns was there also a recall on the manufacture's model that made these for Sears ? Terrill

I remember my Grand-Dad had one of those hanging on the wall in his attic. Only long gun he had. I always wanted to get my hands on it, but he just said it was broke and couldn’t be fixed. At some point, he just threw it out. I still would have liked to have had it as a keepsake.

No, the High Standard bolt had a locking lug. It would not interchange with the JC Higgins model. Don

I managed to scrounge up three of these shotguns before the recall was widely publicized. I got $160 each for the bolts, and Sears even sent prepaid mailing boxes for the bolts.
The recall was apparently successful. Eventually, Sears quit paying $160 and instead offered $50 gift cards. For a few years after the dust settled from the recall, I saw a few of these old guns offered for sale on Gunbroker with no bolts, and I saw a few want ads requesting to buy a bolt for an old Sears shotgun.
You were fortunate to find one still in one piece.

You could probably tape any somewhat close bolt to one of these & turn it in at a gun buy-back.

Only the BA2 12 gauges were bad. The BA1 and the 16 and 20 Gauges in both desigh series were OK.

THere were three different design series of bolt action shotguns by High Standard that Sears sold. The models 10, 11 and 14. High Stadnard only put their name on a very few model 10's sold to military personel over seas. amd thoswere later guns that were past the problem guns. And they put their name on some Model 14s near the end of Sears buying bolt action shotgunsfrom High Standard.

I posted that photo online years ago from my collection of High Standard factory records. Yes they did fail and fail dramatically. There were a lot of lawsuits as a result of the failures. High Standard and Sears settled most of the suits. by th etime of the rfecall, High Standard had been out of business fo rseveral years.
25,000 is less than a years production and the Modle 10 was in production for maybe 10 years.
