Springfield Garand safety question
I bought Springfield Armory M1 garand at a gunshop today. I have confirmed that it is a SA serial#4,234xxx built in 1952. The numbers on barrell match the date for the receiver. The cartouche on the stock is correct for 1952 SA. What I cant figure out is the safety. I have never seen a safety like this on a Garand. It would be useful if the shooter was wearing gloves or mittens. I dont think this rifle has been reconditioned of rebuilt through CMP. Is this safety an after market addition? Does this indicate the trigger group has been switched? Any help would be appreciated.

That is correct. What you don’t have on the rifle is the winter trigger. Go the CMP forum there are pictures of both there. Looks like it was something that was made for the cold conditions in Korea.
