Date this Remington.....I was going by the date code when I looked it up
I got an email from someone saying this listing is wrong.....but I have no clue how to pin down Remingtons because they are horrible to just call everything a "700" without any real way to look things up. I checked the date code on the barrel and got 1962....it has LJK on the barrel.
What do you guys say???

My guess would be the L is for February and the J is for 1989 the K stamped to close to other letters don't know exactly what it means. I also read where the C prefix on serial number came along about 1987. Terrill

That is a head scratcher. L-J is for 1940- 1962- 1989. can't be 1940 because 222 Remington didn't come out till 1950. If read L-K it would be 1941- 1963- 1990. There is no L-JK code. And as stated the K looks extra large. I don't have a clue unless someone re-barreled the rifle at some point with a Remington barrel.

Remington has always been screwy with their serial #s. For a while they used a single letter before the serial # to indicate the year. If this is one of those then my guess is that yours is a 1977 BDL custom deluxe. Bob

A prefix started Aug. 1975 to Jan. 1980, B prefix started Jan. 1980 to Nov. 1987, C prefix started Nov. 1987 this is from Remington 700 25 years 1962-1987 book by John F. Lacy according to this info the C prefix on Kasey's 700 30-06 would make it made after 1987. I still think barrel code would read LJ making it 1989. Terrill

For rifles made between 1967 and 1977, the first letter of the serial number denotes the year. Here's a breakdown for these years: R = 1967 S = 1968 T = 1969 U = 1970 W = 1971 X = 1972 Y = 1973 Z = 1974 A = 1975 B = 1976 C = 1977
👆I found this but it doesn't seem to agree with your source. Why Remington couldn't use a serial # system like everyone else is beyond me! I bet if I keep looking I could find several more "guidelines" and at this point who knows which one would be correct. 😣 Bob

What I am seeing is there were no letter prefix before the serial number on the model 700 from 1962 to 1975. I have a Rem 700 made in 1971 no letter prefix just a serial number. Terrill

I agree with 338. Feb 1989. Remington always put the month first and the year second in their date codes and since they used BLACKPOWDERX to denote the months the J has to be the year since J cannot denote a month. It is also in the style of checkering and stock finish for that time period.
