I got a problem with these parents. The kid was 15 and they bought the pistol for him. They knew he was nutty.

I am with Warbirds on this . However, parents bear a lot of responsibility in this . They knew child was wacky , provided access to guns and abrogated their parental duties at the school meeting . They are deserving of some punishment but I am not sure of just what is appropriate.

No idea who she or her kid was. First off it's Detroit. The parents bought him a gun? At least they won't be breeding for a while. I don't know if the kid was off but this whole thing falls under bad parenting. They're parents not enabler. Remind me not to move into the 'burbs.

Under questioning during the investigation his parents - and in court his mother - admitted they were aware that he was and is deeply messed up. Yet for his 15th birthday they bought him his own pistol. Yes, it had to be a straw purchase by one of his parents but it was a birthday present for him and, for all intents and purposes, was his pistol. Which he used to murder four students.

If you remember Adam Lanzas mother also bought him guns so they could Target shoot... He killed her and all those babies at Sandy hook.

The saddest part of these stories is that in todays world nothing is done to help the mentally ill.
Did the parents screw up and drop the ball in the parenting department?? Yup. Big time.
Did the school drop the ball?? Yup. Big time.
With this level of nutty did the school inform the police??
Had the police heard of this kid from other sources?? If the police been informed or had heard about this whack job then
they also screwed up. Again, screwed up big time.
Wouldn't it be interesting if along with the parents being on trial there would be some harsh consequences for the school authorities and the police involved.
If the school authorities and the police could be looking at a couple of years slammer time for not doing anything in situations like this there might be a whole different attitude on mentally ill students rather than yawning and doing nothing.

Unfortunately it all comes down to one thing liability. The school doesn't want it, the police don't and there is parent or school board who will take away all that you worked for over the years if you try to intervene and they think you are wrong.. The icing on the cake is the scum bag lawyer waiting to sue you after everyone else is done with you.
There is no longer any morals or personal responsibility to hopefully stop stuff like this from happening. No law is going to stop this from happening again and again so I expect we will see these shooting again. Having someone convicted makes everyone "feel" good.
The mental health issue is a huge problem. In our town we used to have a large mental health institution. It was run miserably by the State so it was shut down in 1992. Nothing was done with the people except to put them out in the community with no supervision.
