Holster Question
I need advice on what is a good retention holster for a 1911.

I love my Galco. But then, it’s the only one I have ever used. Others on here are more capable of offering up advice.

Kydex or leather?

Galco Yaqui. Not that being in California I can pack more than a sack lunch.

Kydex and leather, by me. Little unorthodox but I like the dozen made for me for several pistols, including a Gold Cup. Not retention but kind of acts that way. Extremely comfortable IWB at 4:00. Most of them need a twist to slide out.

….Galco…I've had the same holster for years, I just keep Lexol leather conditioner on it…I've got both full size 1911's & Commanders, just carry a Commander…if you carry a full size 1911, no problem, Galco makes their holsters for the two barrel lengths, I have no complaints…

Hard to do better than Galco for leather holsters

Depending on the season and where I was going....…I'd like to put one of my Gold Cups in a suede-lined Safariland shoulder holster.
Works for me......

Having carried a 1911 on duty, uniformed and plain clothes, for many years, the only way I would carry a 1911 is condition 1, loaded with the hammer cocked, and safety on. Any way of carrying a 1911 without a round in the chamber takes far too long to get it into action and ties up both of your hands which is never a good idea. For a condition 1 carry, it is important to use a holster with a thumb strap. I've seen several accidental discharges when a 1911 was carried condition 1 depending only on the safety which is easily disengaged when contacting clothing, a seat belt, etc. especially if there is a safety lever on both sides of the frame. The strap secures the gun in place, and provides protection from an accidental discharge. And the strap does not slow down your draw. The thumb flicks the strap up while your fingers wrap around the grip.

Anyone used an Urban Carry holster? My friend has one for his Sig 365. He loves it. It has a retention feature. They have dozens of different styles.

I used to daily carry concealed my combat commander is a DeSantis similar to the Kimber holster shown in an above post , always condition 1 always with the thumb strap securing the gun between frame and cocked hammer , from what I was taught and soon realized this is the only proper way to carry .
