I have a heat pump w/ a propane backup. The system works fine except for a period in the fall and spring. When the day & night outside temperature vary quite a bit my thermostat can't change from heat to cool. Are there thermostats that do?

Our geothermal heat pump uses a digital/LCD thermostat made by White-Rodgers. It can be set to "auto", to enable heat or cool operation.....…in addition to specific heat OR cool settings.
One function, that I really like, counts the hours of the air handler blower operation. My setting it at 800 hours will flag me to "change filter" at the proper time. In the summer, it can take as little as 6 weeks........and in the winter, as long as 14 to 16 weeks. BUT..…...the filter(MERV 11) always comes out the same.........about 80% "dirty", per my hours setting.
Also, there’s a "save" option........which slightly increases the "dead band" around a given temperature setpoint........so the unit's on-off operations are reduced/less frequent.

Yes!
Look for one with auto change over. It also has to be for a heat pump with gas backup(auxiliary heat). There are several available, just have to read thru the specs in the tstat.

I just installed an ecobee thermostat in my house. I also have a heat pump with gas back up. I am pretty sure it is capable of switching back-and-forth from the heat pump to the back up unit. It was easy to install, and the factory was able to answer a few of my questions. I would recommend it.

The age old question- Do you fiddle with the thermostat daily or just tell her to do it herself…

Just be sure that you get one that has the option to disable the "early on" feature, that makes it warm up or cool down the home at the prescribed time.
It's supposed to work like this:
You want the house to be 70 degrees at 6 am when you get up. So the system says "aha! I need to turn on the system early so at 6 am it will be 70 degrees".
Well, that sounds good doesn't it? Yeah. But in actual practice what happens is that the system decides that any given day it's going to take 3 hours to get the house to that temperature. So it turns on at 3 am. By 3:30 you're awake because either the heat or the cold is blaring.
So you decide, "wow that was too early. I'm going to game the system so it is 70 degrees at 9 am instead." Oh, if only it were that easy. The system tries to outsmart you. "9am? Oh, well based on my data it's already always 70 degrees at 9am." So it never turns on.

At HQ the men kept turning the temp down & the women kept turning it up. They even broke the plastic box to prevent this. So I screwed a non-working thermostat onto the wall next to the real one. Wrote NG on the real one & left a dummy wire pair hanging out from behind it. No more problem.

Mr. P., you just described the "Smart" thermostat I have in my house. My wife has put a new chore on my honeydoo list to change the smart one for a dumb one that I or she can set manually. Thinking of just one of those Honeywell mercury switch types if they are still available.
