Found this schematics of a Smith&Wesson top break 44-40. Looks like it uses a flat spring. Now if you can’t locate a spring it’s possible to make one for it. I have a formula in and old gun smithing book on how to make and temper a spring.

SOMETIMES it is possible to form a spring from spring wire in the shape of the flat spring.. Good luck.

try these, jack first gun parts (g.p.), popperts g.p. outback g.p.(indiana) homestead g.p. if one of these guys cant find it there may not be one in captivity. i repaired a model 1879 d.a. and the spring #66 looks very familiar, my memory is dim but i think that is what governed trigger return. jack first had it

I recently learned that Cimarron makes a modern copy of this gun. I have a call in to them for the part.

    Thanks!!!

Really? I have seen their NM No 3 and Russian top break single actions but did not know anybody was making replicas of double action top breaks.

if jack first doesn't have it. It's possible to make it from a bigger spring. Just have to be careful about not taking temper out of it
