A break-in across the street
Yesterday, the neighbor across the street came to the house and told us that one of their cars was broken in to. She also said the thief got into their garage thru the side door. She wanted to know if we had any security cameras that might have seen the incident. I was unable to help as there are no cameras pointed in that direction.
But I actually could have helped if I had a way to kindly tell her that parking 5 cars outside, a couple of them clunkers, is a significant attraction to smash & grab thieves. I could have also offered up that she talk to her kids because this kind of thing is seldom just random and the kids seem to operate some strange hours.
I don't live in a bad neighborhood. I'm not concerned for my safety when I go to bed. But things like I described remind me that nowhere is completely safe and the difference between "victim of a crime" and "house they passed by" is often a difference of a few degrees.
Home security begins on the outside. Don't give criminals an easy target. And always hope for the best but prepare for the worst.

It more than likely will turn out to be someone they know, that’s if they ever catch them. I’ve been robbed twice over the years, it’s a sinking feeling.
Just had a friend of mine that lives in town get robbed last month. Stole his John Deere GT 485 garden tractor. It was stored at a house in the garage he is fixing up to sell. As I told him that was planned out, not random, account of that tractor had to weigh around 850 pounds. They had to of brought a trailer to haul it away. That and the locks were cut with bolt cutters.0 -
