IIt Is a Boyds Chief - some people don't like them, (or laminate in general), but for certain guns there aren't a ton of options. Personally, I think they make some guns more comfortable - and a little bling. I have set up some Americans Is Sharps Bros. tactical frames and they are super-cool, but way more expensive.

I really like Boyds stocks the only drawback is their weight.
Don't worry about the naysayers, the rifle doesn't care what color the stock is.
At least it's not a scary black assault rifle.

Prefer Boyds laminate on BR builds. Love the weight and thumbhole. Fit is perfect with my 6BR build and have another Boyd on 6PPC with BAT action.
Other than BRs and ARs, My preference is dark walnut & blued steel.

There really is only one correct answer to your question. Do you like it? If you like it and it works for you, that’s all that matters.
There are times I wish I could shoot left handed, I wouldn’t have to swing my whole body around to shoulder my rifle on my right shoulder when hunting. There wouldn’t be so much movement on my part.0 -
That finish is downright hypnotic, wow. I don't feel strongly enough about it to say I love it, but I can at least say I like it.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm assuming your use of "abuse" here means you feel like this is "too much" to do to a gun, in terms of modifying or decorating it? The Ruger American is a 2011 rifle that's actively being produced nowadays by the bunch, it's not like it's a historical or otherwise rare piece being "defaced" by customization. Like I said, tell me if I interpreted this wrong. I just thought it odd you'd call it abuse when that's usually reserved for people who take a Kar98 and paint it with a "My Little Pony" Rainbow Dash motif.
