scope recommendation ?
Looking to buy used. I need a scope for deer hunting. I don't expect any very long shots but I'd like very good optics from a maker that is known for quality. I'll spend as much as $200 but $100 would make me happy. I'm thinking something common like 2x-9x . If this is the wrong forum I'm sorry in advance. I've been away.

This is pushing your high end limit but for the best optics for the buck, it would be my choice. Bob

Can't go wrong for the $ w/that D-Back. I really the the budget Bushies also. For another hundred you can do the Elite 4500 2.5x10, but its non-illuminated. The one below is a ton of scope for $200, and you can usually get them slightly below that.

If your hunting is only going to be out to, or under a 100 yards all you really need is a 2 or 3 power fixed scope. You didn’t say what type of rifle you would be using. Recoil is what damages the scope. For years I used a cheap Tasco 2 power scope for deer hunting on my 12ga shotgun, the scope was made for a shotgun use. I dropped a lot of deer with that combination. But over time the scope lost its rigidity and I put a 3x9 power Leopold on it, but I still only use the 3 power setting. I can’t really speak on some of the newer scopes, but when looking for quality, I’ve always had good luck with Burris, Leopold and Redfield.

Never used a Burris, Leupold is my go to.
Just a hint, I have bought quite a few rifles and nearly all of then wore a Burris if that helps.
Must be pretty good and modestly priced.

Vortex is good for the price and also agree with Lucky about the Bushnells.

I got a Vortex 2-7 scout laying around I took off my Marlin Guide Gun a while ago. Mounted and took off before zeroing it that needs a new home since my eyes shifted so I can't use a scout style scopes.

The Vortex 'SCOUT' scopes aren't meant for 'normal' mounting due to the extended (and I mean 6-8") eye relief.
For the OP: I recommend VORTEX scopes for any/all purposes. Economical and very good quality especially for the price.
For the stated purpose, the Crossfire line is great. 2-7x32 or 3-9x40 will do everything your rifle is suitable for w/o handicapping your potential.
I don't recommend any 50mm objective size scope due to their need for higher rings to clear barrel or mounting base. 50mm isn't needed for adequate light gathering with the VORTEX line.

I agree w/Mo on 50mm objectives - and in general seems like many shooters overestimate the distances at which they will be practically operating. While it boggles the mind how much some manufacturers charge for a 1x4, the glass quality and durability do actually matter. The Trijicon Accupoints are a fantastic line of scopes and provide a great, no-battery illuminated dot. But the rascals are pricey as, well - very pricey.
