Hereford, Texas, called their team "Whitefaces" for the Hereford cattle markings- wonder if they're still using that.

A town near where I grew up were the Pekin Chinks........

In 1981 it was changed to the Pekin Dragons... When I was a kid, we used to go skate at the Chink Rink...

As my wife and I were discussing this woke silliness over mascots and team names, she made an interesting observation.

There are a lot of pirates around here. And the team cartoonized character, often painted on the gym wall, is almost always holding a knife. Usually a bloody knife at that.

Can you even imagine? A knife depicted in school. I guess, at least it's not a gun.

ah yes, the renowned winner of the 1964 IHSA state championship. Dave Golden was the star who went on to a fine college career at Purdue. they defeated a Cobden team[maybe 100 students] but who fielded a team of a 6-7 center and 6 players of 6-4+. the high school coach left Cobden following the school year to take the job at Nashville High School where he amassed IHSA Hall of Fame awards in both coaching sports and Officiating careers.

to add to the theme of this topic, my favorite mascot/nickname goes to the Hoopeston-East Lynn[Illinois] Cornjerkers

I left for college (UW) in '58 and never went back except to visit family and my main squeeze. Been in Indy since and 42 years ago I got out of the hood and moved 25 miles west. I still go by on my way to Sturgis and always stop at Agatucci's.

I was a Eureka Hornet !! We moved to Northern Illinois and lived there for over 30 years. We retired and moved to the farm in MO... Still run though the Peoria area to see family and friends. Then I hightail it out of there !!
