Sight picture
When using iron sights, do you put your point of impact behind the bead or directly on top of it?

Directly on top of where I want the bullet to hit.
If you count my Daisy pump BB gun I've been shooting for 72 years. I have always put the sight in this manner.

Me too and for about that long.

Bead over POI. I tried dialing in a 6:00 hold but found I ignored it and naturally covered the target.

Growing up hunting with my .22's I used the POI sight picture, which I thought was the correct way. Then I read in a Gun Digest article that the 6:00 sight picture was the correct way. By that time I wasn't squirrel hunting anymore so it didn't make any difference. When plinking I still use the POI hold. When shooting bullseye pistol competition almost everyone used the 6:00 hold.

Kevin, a 6:00 hold makes all the sense in the world!! It is obvious you can see what you are sighting on more clearly. The problem is that, like you, I can't do it. My sights are on what I'm shooting at, not below what I'm shooting at! Whatever our problem is, we got the same problem!!😁

I was taught and have always taught the pumpkin on a fence post style. Bob

Kind of depends on what I’m shooting at and with what I’m shooting. If I’m shooting at something close with a 22 rim fire with an open rear sight and a post front sight, it’s point of aim, such as hunting game, or shooting at a tin can. If I’m shooting at targets say with a Winchester 75 with target sights, (rear peep and front globe with a post) I tend to do better holding the post at 6 o’clock after I got it sighted in for that particular yardage. I believe holding low on a target when shooting at a target other than printed targets originated in the military, eg. shooting at man sized targets at 300 or more yards with open sights.

I do it both ways depending on the sights. If I have the bead on the front sight I use it.

Back in the day........I shot too many NRA Short Course matches, to NOT have 6 o'clock hold on paper bullseye targets.
Iron sight rifles.......is a different story. 😉

But what if you're not shooting at pumpkins? Then what? 😁

Hey, it works for apples, pears, any kinda squash and even artichokes! I will admit that during a hunter safety class demo I held on the center where the stem was when I was blowing up water melons. So I guess it depends on how big the target is and what part ya wanna hit!😁 Bob

It takes me too long to find the center of a zucchini using open sights.
I now just use a shotgun when it is zucchini season.

wait, you guys aim using the sights?

I call it aiming though after seeing the results, others have questioned my use of that term.

What is the bag limit on zucchini where you hunt?

It depends on the shot distance and how the gun is sighted. My iron sights are always adjusted so the POI is just above the top of the front post for normal short distance shots. If the shot distance is going to be a bit longer I simply tip the gun up a bit so the sight covers the wanted POI. The longer the shot, the more it is raised. No sight adjustments needed.

My accessory rails block out the sights.
I've been known to use pumpkin on fence post in past.

I prefer to use a Center of Mass sight picture.
The front sight covers 1/2 of the target.

shoot low, they might be riding shetlands.

Depends on the gun
point shooting game i prefer a post to cover the target

I taught myself to shoot with accuracy, always using the 6 o'clock hold, just seemed natural to me, and I don't lose site of exactly where I want the bullet to hit.

At my age (78) iron sights are pretty much useless. If I don't have optic sights, it's spray and pray time! 😎
