Even license plate screws can be metric!🤪

    Our 4runners use M6-1.0 screws.

That's why I've got thread gauges. and a thick metal card that has threads and marked too

I've got boxes of screws and sort them all the time.

It is ignorant to have both Metric and S.A.E. especially when working with people that don't recognize that they aren't universal.

Couldn't tell you how many times we find fasteners forced into the wrong thread. It's an expensive but common occurrence.

    Same here jimdeere.

My father in law, the machinists was expert.

Also, the marks on the head of a bolt tells you the grade.

Working at different places over the years I have seen metric and sae mixed a thread gage is a necessity when working on most anything.

the 80' GM products were terrible about that

Designing and working with small assemblies for so many years, I'm pretty good with SAE threads. Metrics are difficult unless I know the diameter # then I can guess the pitch 50% of the time. Yes, GM in their infinite wisdom used both on the same car. To their credit I believe metrics had blue heads. Let's not talk about British threads. Thank you Mr. Whitworth.

The mere fact we have metrics is proof we are not the manufacturing superpower & world leader we used to be.

I can get #4 thru #10 coarse or fine but #12 gets complicated with 3/16" getting in the way. The larger sizes I can spot most but metric, forget it. There are 3 different pitches in metric. I would have to work with them every day to be able to I'd them.

Metrics have so many pitches I have to use a pitch gauge on all of them.

    Damm foreigners.

    Same here.

Same again. I know most of the NC and NF threads per inch sizes in my head from 1/4 through one inch. I can usually spot metric bolts from about 6mm-20mm because the thread pitch looks funny.

I can tell you sizes of American threads SAE and USS by eye. Metrics I need a gage to determine pitch.

I used to years ago when I was a Parts Manager at a Chevy dealership.

I don't need to know that anymore, so all that knowledge is lost.

As to the post title, I'm ok on machine screws #8-#12. Smaller than that I'm not so good. But hey, I'm generally a heavy equipment guy and there ain't many fasteners that tiny on bigger machines.
