Something different as I don’t recall those forends on any of the 77s I had through the years and it has been dozens.

TALO sold a .308 "Lightweight" M77 that was limited production - there are also reviews on a .243 "Compact" - but nothing I saw referenced a .243 Lightweight M77 specifically. Not surprising however - in the Browning BLR world the terms "Take-Down" and "Lightweight" are used almost interchangeably - and incorrectly so in some cases.

The "compacts" I have seen have 18.5 inch barrels. Blue Book shows the M77 came with 22 or 24 inch barrels.

I think maybe this is an oddity, if not a rarity.

That is the M77 RL. 20 inch barrel was standard, as was the black fore end tip. And I'm pretty sure all of the M77s from that time frame had aluminum trigger guards and floorplates, with the exception of the African express rifle which I believe was steel.

You beat me to it Chris. The RL was the lightweight and the aluminum floor plate was standard on most versions. I know because if you scratched one up they were a pain in the butt to refinish properly. Not that I would ever scratch a gun🙄. Bob

This is a copy from around 1995. I remember seeing these in the mid-80s as well, so I don't know when Ruger discontinued this version. The M77 in the 80s was prior to the MKll version, but was virtually identical.

BobJudy- I know what you mean about the aluminum floorplate. I re-did the floorplate on my 1969 flat bolt with DuraCoat's gloss blue, and it came out looking pretty nice.

I recall those. In that '80's time frame, a gun shop in a nearby city had 2 of 'em in .250 Savage. I sure wanted one! But circumstances weren't right somehow. I do have an International in that chambering but that lightweight would have fit right in.

As a mountain hunter in Arizona I remember looking at those rifles when they came out. I passed on buying one because of the short “20” inch super thin barrels.
