Mrs. Turtle Makes a Nest
She left the French Broad River, and crossed a 100 yard wide hayfield to make the nest this morning. The hay was just mowed 3 days ago, and the bales just picked up yesterday. I wonder if she waited for the hay to get out of the way.

You will have to take some pictures when the turtles hatch and post them. Or better yet help them get to the river. I’m sure crossing 100 yard field something will be looking to put the little ones on the menu.
Don’t ever remember finding a turtle nest before, would be interesting to watch.0 -

Seen that ones twin this morning trying to make a egg laying nest in hard packed flint rock ground and short mowed grassy area.
I was working nearby and the turtle never did get a hole dug. She looked depressed because it was having a bad day and the temp getting into the 90's and ground hard packed.
I thought Mrs turtle I would help you dig that hole but you would probably not even use it if I helped and then I would also be depressed. She was also in the middle of a trailer yard traffic area and not a good place for a nest.
Nearest pond water was about 100 yards away.

Your right, always identified painteds by the plastron which is not visible. In my youth collected all 4 species of painteds. Adults are not as large as sliders but there are rare exceptions. In Allen's pic, the carapace looks to be around 10".

The shell on this turtle was about 15 inches long and 10 inches wide. Big Mrs. Turtle.

That is larger painted than I ever saw (I have lived in midland and western ranges). Most I have seen, kept and bred, have been smaller than red ears. Here they max at about 8", and have gotten much less common since the introduction of red ears.

If that is a painted, its a world record.

She was wandering around the same area yesterday. If I see her today I'll get a pic with a tape measure.

This beast was out in the river today. Telephoto lens, probably 50 yards out. They like to get the sun in the river. Big turtle.

We have box turtles aquired as adults in 1990. They can live long, though most folks don't do nearly as well as your son.
