Wow. Level headed response in a dire situation. Sadness by the young men that they had to dispatch the bear shows their character.

They are very lucky they are alive. They were able to react under such danger and fear.

yeah, its not clear if he cleared the 1911 and kept using it or grabbed his buddies 10mm. Curious to know.

yeah, its not clear if he cleared the 1911 and kept using it or grabbed his buddies 10mm. Curious to know.

Braxtons Mother told me “He said he had malfunction ,thinking he was empty, dumped the magazine and inserted magazine #2, and went back to work the back of the bears head, with one of the rounds severing the spinal cord at or near the base of the skull”. “The first magazine was found later and still held 3 live rounds”
Not being familiar with the Taurus, I’m not sure if the slide locks open on a empty magazine, so possibly he inadvertently dumped the magazine , and he fed the next magazine and it went to battery and he went back to work. Just my thoughts, what say you guys?

I’m sure I’ll get more details in the coming week.

She also told “ that previously he had never carried a extra magazine, but had recently gotten a new carry rig that had a spot for the second and he said “well, it has a spot for it, why not”.

All said and done, I’m glad the good Lord was riding shotgun with these young men.

Just wow. To be able to think and function under those conditions is just amazing. Upbringing and training showed through.

Watching a video of the taurus 1911, the slide does lock back on empty mag. Not sure what happened with Braxtons, but he was able to clear it, load another mag and continue.

I'd put that 1911, ( taurus or not ) in a glass front shadow box with a copy of the news story, and on my mantle it would be retired. Saved me once, that's all I asked. It'd be retired.

I'd get another 1911. Not sure another taurus but another 1911. Just my thoughts.

JMHO, And to each their own, 45 ACP 230gr ammo is not what I would use nor what I personally carry for Bear medicine.

I understand the thought process behind the amount of volume of fire with the 45 or 10mm, but I will continue to carry my single action FA mod 83 454 Casull 6” loaded with these when I trod where Ursus Horribilis resides, which just about everywhere I go except antelope hunting. Believe me when I say these are not rounds you want to practice with, that’s what the 45 long colt or light 454 rounds are for.

this is what I feed the “camp gun” a marlin 1895 Guide gun and though it hasn’t had to be used on grizzlies at this point, I have broken both shoulders on 300# black bears at 60-80 yards, have yet to recover a bullet because they exited.

Your mileage may vary, but this is just my experience and how I roll.

    I've got a smith 629 .44mag I would take with me.

    Like, it's. 44mag. It's a revolver

    Dislike, it's a revolver

That's the largest caliber I own.

I too feel the 10mm and .45 are not best choice for bear, especially big grizz.
