Covid and traffic

Traffic was down during the china flu .However,,in my view , current traffic is the result of more and younger idiots behind the wheel. They are glued to the phone the extent they cannot be bothered to do the simple tasks of driving according to the rules of the road. Observe them closely ,if they are under 35 they are on the phone .Addendum ,in my area we are overwhelmed with illegals .They do not know how to drive and follow the traffic laws yet they have cars!

If they are taking chances with things back to normal, I doubt covid was a direct factor. Coincidence, sure.

    I feel pulsarnc nailed it.

Well… I'll agree that there was less traffic during the lock downs, but not that people took more chances, and as far as distractions of phones while driving, I see people of all ages using their phones in stead of paying attention to the road around them, so no imho it is not just the under 35 crowd it is all folks have become self centered even us older folks, It is easy to try and blame others when in reality, again in my opinion, we are all to blame and we all need to do better.

I agree that people are taking more chances and are ignoring all type of traffic laws.

Just one example, I travel a lot for work. Pre-covid people were more predictable in their driving. Now when on the highway it is not unusual to have me passing me like I was standing still when I am doing 75 mph.

I was speaking with a Trooper at one event we were at and he said they have been told that there will be no high speed chases.

Locally I have never seen more drivers that don't use turn signals or they they will pull out in front of your when you are doing 50 mph and not a person behind you or they openly will run a red light just as it turns.

I am not sure that it is Covid related though. I think it is more related to the "me" attitude of people as stated before.

I believe the summer of rioting put lots of folks in the mindset of “screw you I’ll do whatever I want” and there aren’t enough police to really stop it

It seems to me that Covid has had a definite effect on traffic. During the epidemic traffic was definitely lighter than normal. Therefore people were taking more chances like running red lights and stop signs. Now that things have more or less returned to normal people are still taking more chances. What do you think?

    Sorry.

I thought I could beat the yellow.

Same here, though speed limits and red lights have always been seen as suggestions.

In Michigan the side road edges are so broken up that everyone drives the center of the road to avoid the rough crap and damage to their car/tires. Our infrastructure is beyond repair on the rural roads.

Now, add distracted driving to that, and you have the perfect recipe for head-on collisions or loss of control into the ditch.

Nothing will change though, because all current politicos would rather give our money to whomever gets them reelected. Vicious circle 101.

Note: I am not disagreeing that people are stupid, there's always been ignorance. Covid may be a new excuse for stupidity.

    I think I've said this before....…but it's worth repeating.

The age of "personal responsibility" began it's decline during the terms of Slick Willie clinton..........….and here we are.😡

Absolutely NOTHING to enjoy........about this aspect of our society.☹

    JMHO

distracted drivers cell phones tablets and so on

Too many drunk and high drivers

Even police chases caused by pushing the bad guy girl to pull over only they go faster and crash killing innocent people

Too many illegals driving even Comercial trucks that should not even be in the country

Add in more people on the roads every year increasing the odds of accidents

I even see / read in the local news at least once or twice a week mpre some weks some one crossing the centerline and taking out innocent people just in the wrong.place and time

I have Lost several friends and several family members over such people not paying attention

I will admit I was an " aggressive " driver when much younger, street racing and speeding. but I was also extremely carefully picking the time and place to do such things and always focused on the cars and roads around me a lot different ti.s for sure

Yep and to be short: Covid was a crisis created by the government and used to test human behavior and experiment with how much control big government could place on the people. For a while results initially looked favorable to the powers to be, in the end COVID had an opposite effect an proved we could NEVER trust government. COVID is another reason we need the Second Amendment

    Just more stupid, impatient drivers.

I've been watching sort strange thing on ROKU called crash video. Much of the video is from eastern Europe(?) and is totally insane(but mesmerizingly funny).

Of course bicyclic riders do not think red lights and stop signs do not apply to them.

If you don't think this is true, you should have your town host RAGBRAI some night.

Bad driving is not a COVID problem, it's a people problem.

As stated in posts above, in this age, people are extremely self-centered and self-indulgent. Everyone expects to have it their way right now. If I miss a turn I don't cut across 2 lanes of traffic to make it, or slow down until I can force my way in. I find a way to come back around or turn later and find a new route. Most people don't drive that way anymore.

The only thing COVID did was reduce traffic during the shutdown.

AND I seen lots of them idiots in a vehicle by themselves wearing a mask and using a cell phone while driving.

I've heard a question "If a stupid person goes senile, how would you know?"

One answer, they are wearing a mask while driving themselves.

Them kind of idiot people also get to vote.

it's fairly evident………the political leanings………of those idiots who wear masks in cars when alone, or those who wear masks outdoors………..or those who wear masks period after their ineffectiveness and the bs of social distancing has been shown to have no basis in science.

Some of the people that wear masks were wearing them before the Covid insanity. I have several friends and relatives that wear them due to other medical reasons.

A big part of it is migration…. not just illegals, but people from other states. I can only assume that California must be very lax in enforcing traffic laws, just as they are lax in enforcing drug laws.

There is definitely way more traffic on the 4 lane in front of my house. Many more out of state cars than in the past. This used to be known for heavy highway patrol presence, but lately I hardly ever see a state trooper.

Im convinced cell phones are the biggest problem

I was looking at traffic on highway 1 towards Monterey this week. It was bad but I think it's worse now. I saw it backed up from Community Hospital to Marina this whole week. Typically it gets bad from what used to be the Main Gate of Fort Ord to community hospital. Did school start? That might add volume about 0730/0800.

I'm just glad my time on the road is bad the other way.
