Hummers here in NWNC have already left for southern destination. Seems a few weeks early.

Cold is not too far away.

The rufous hummers are here right on time, but the numbers on our feeders are up, indicating birds are moving south. They gather in the Mountains of S. NM and Arizona, before leaving in large multi-species flocks moving south, mostly along the coast and mountain range to mountain range.

No kidding. I'm in western North Carolina and I still have all 5 of mine, they are out there engaged in combat right now.

This year, I have two families of them. Had been three in years past. The young of the year have been flying for three weeks now, and they seriously deplete my feeders bulking up for their first trip south. Mine are black-chinned hummies, and they always leave with the full moon in September. I get stragglers and migrators until about Oct 15, which is about when I sadly take my feeders down.

Please do NOT believe the old wives tale that you should take your feeders down to "force them" to migrate. By doing so, you do make them leave, but with empty stomachs and no reserves. You're basically killing them.

There are 6 species of hummingbirds in Montana.

Ours are all black-chinned. We see an occasional broadtail or rufous during migration, but they don't live here.

We regularly get black-chinned, calliope, and rufous. It's a good thing the rufous are as small as they are! They're about the most aggressive little buggers you've ever seen.
